Ambrotype gets its name from the Greek word ambrosios (immortal, divine). It is a variation of the old photographic method (the wet collodion process) invented by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851. The image in an Ambrotype is created by the reflection of light in an underexposed negative on glass. Collodion (formerly used as a liquid bandage) is used as a carrier for bromine and iodine silver salts.
Once developed, the image on the glass is semi-transparent and therefore black paint, glass, or, in our case, velvet is used as a base layer.
Due to the fact that black velvet has the ability to absorb light, the resulting image is characterized by deep blacks and silvery highlights, typical of this particular photographic technique.
The resulting image is a photograph rendered on a glass plate (2mm) set in a wooden frame. Black velvet is used as the background of the picture.
The picture is equipped with a hook on the back and can be hung directly.
